arXiv Unclaimed
arXiv is a free, open-access preprint repository offering rapid dissemination of scholarly research across multiple disciplines.
arXiv is a free distribution service and open-access archive hosting nearly 2.4 million scholarly articles across physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics. The repository enables rapid dissemination of research as preprints and is not peer-reviewed by arXiv. It is supported by The Simons Foundation, member institutions, and a broad community of contributors, and operates within Cornell University’s ecosystem as it evolves toward independent nonprofit status. The platform provides centralized browsing and search across its archives, enabling researchers, students, and the public to discover, access, and share research outputs and to follow developments across disciplines.
To provide universal, barrier-free access to scholarly preprints, accelerating discovery and collaboration by enabling researchers to share results before formal publication.

Methodology and sourcing behind the figures shown above.
Open-access preprint archives
Primary numeric basis: MarketIntelo’s Open Access Publishing market estimate ($14.2B in 2025; 7.8% CAGR). Preprint archives are a small subset of the broader open-access publishing ecosystem (many servers nonprofit, limited direct APC/revenue). I estimate preprint archives capture roughly ~1% of the overall open access publishing market (~$0.15B in 2025). Adoption of preprints is rising faster than overall OA publishing (mandates, funder policies, increasing preprint submissions), so I project a higher CAGR (~12%) versus the market’s 7.8%.
Scholarly discovery and indexing
Search results did not contain explicit figures for the scholarly discovery & indexing segment. Estimate derived from industry hierarchy and vendor revenue signals: the global STM/scholarly publishing ecosystem is on the order of tens of billions USD annually; discovery, abstracting/indexing and library discovery services represent a small subset (low-single-digit to mid-single-digit percent) of that ecosystem. Major providers (indexing/discovery/analytics vendors) generate combined revenues consistent with a market in the low billions. Growth potential (approx. 7% CAGR) reflects continued research output growth, expanding demand for discovery, analytics and programmatic access, and investment in AI-enabled discovery tools offset by constrained library budgets and price sensitivity.
Long-term scholarly preservation and access
Search results provide an OA scholarly publishing market size ($2.2B in 2023) and near-term OA market-value CAGR (~6.3%). Using Delta Think’s OA value as a comparator (OA ≈20% of journals value implies total journals ≈$11B), long-term preservation/access services are a small share of the scholarly publishing ecosystem (infrastructure, trusted repositories, and third‑party preservation platforms). Given Ithaka/S+R and sector surveys showing limited adoption and a mixed mix of nonprofit and profit-seeking providers, I estimate preservation/access at roughly 2–3% of the journals market (~$0.3B). Growth potential is set near mid-single digits (~6% CAGR), aligned with observed OA market-value growth and rising demand for persistent access and commercial provider expansion.
